Calne Town Centre

Calne Town Centre

Calne Town Centre Phase II is an exciting and forward thinking project commissioned by North Wiltshire District Council. This £5m award winning project comprises a new library, shops with accommodation above, designed by Aaron Evans Architects and a riverside park designed by ourselves.

The riverside park focused on an urban river restoration for the River Marden. The scheme involved the re-routing and rehabilitation of an urbanised section of the River Marden around which a high quality riverside garden has been constructed.

Our contribution

  • River restoration design
  • Design of the external works
  • Site inspection role during river works
  • Consultation and support during the planning process

The whole scheme is built from limestone to create a 'natural' feature and is designed to incorporate pools and riffles sections with other geomorphological features including gravel shoals, naturally bedded rock to river banks, and locally appropriate native species planting. In addition high quality stone paving and carefully selected street furniture set off one of the 'greenest' new buildings in Wiltshire within a sensitive conservation area.

The gardens contain artworks such as mosaics, purpose designed seating, street furniture and railings. The scheme has become and is being used as a 'best practice' example of urban river rehabilitation.
