Clean Sweep

Clean Sweep Cove

Many of the coastal towns of Devon and Cornwall have sewerage systems that were built during the early part of the 20th century to carry wastewater to the sea via short outfalls. These have been scheduled for improvement as part of South West Water 'Clean Sweep' programme to meet legislation set out within the EC Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.

Many of these locations are located within highly sensitive environments, with many and varied planning designations including Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Heritage Coasts, SSSIs and Conservation Areas. These designations result in numerous constraints upon the planning and design process.
