EIA Handbook

“We all need an accessible, practical explanation of EIA, whether we are developers, consultants, central or local authority officers, environmental regulators, environmental activists, local residents, students or academics. This handbook is it!”

Christopher Wood, EIA Centre, School of Planning and Landscape, University of Manchester

Environmental impact assessment (EIA), has become a crucial part of the development process. An understanding of EIA procedures is an increasing necessity for all those involved in this process.

A unique addition to the literature on this subject, Environmental Impact Assessment Handbook is an approachable and practical guide, with many illustrated explanations and examples, written from the practitioner's perspective. The handbook approach has been designed with cross-referencing and checklists, which makes the guide a valuable introductory text as well as a useful reference tool for the EIA practitioner.

Environmental Impact Assessment Handbook will be essential reading for all planners, designers, engineers, architects, surveyors and developers, and all other professionals working as project managers on development proposals. It will also be an invaluable resource for students and community groups.

“A useful resource with cross-references, checklists and sources, illustrated with case studies." Landscape Design, October 2002

"This is one of those books rarely available to practitioners - a practical and instantly usable guide rather than an academic text. The handbook is equally valuable to newcomers to the field of EIA as well as those of us who might be a "little rusty". It should therefore be on the desk of every consultant, developer, local authority planner and environmental regulator concerned with EIA in the UK.”

Dr Andrew Brookes, Gifford and Partners, Southampton

“This book will be particularly useful to local planning authorities and developers who have had little previous experience of EIAs and require an overview...the principles and practises have a potential world wide application...written in a jargon-free, non technical style”.

The Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment.

“This handbook is an attempt to make EIA accessible through practical explanation to the growing body of professions, which need to know. Considerable thought has gone into the design of the book and the presentation of information, all aimed at making the reader's life easier.   The authors bring a wealth of practical experience and knowledge to their task which is exemplified in a crisply written text."

Water and Environment Manager, September 2002
