Newton Park

We have prepared a Historic Landscape Survey and Restoration Plan for this registered historic landscape by 'Capability' Brown which includes a Scheduled Ancient Monument and listed buildings. The wider parkland is managed under agricultural tenancies, but the core of the landscape is now the home of the Bath Spa University College.

Research indicated that a previous attribution to Humphry Repton was unreliable and that the park was laid out primarily by 'Capability' Brown. Brown's retention of substantial elements of the earlier formal landscape, and the survival of his Pleasure Ground largely intact are significant parts of the historic importance of the site. Our report focused on parkland restoration, the improved integration of modern college buildings into the historic setting, and essential repairs to Brown's system of lakes and pleasure grounds.

Our contribution

  • Preparation of Historic Landscape Survey and Restoration Plan
  • Replanting of parkland and avenue trees
  • Lake restoration works, including desilting, and repair of weirs and cascades
  • Hard and soft landscape works
  • Creation of a permissive public path route
  • Compilation of a Development Strategy for the College
  • Project management of grant aided works

Following adoption of the plan by the Duchy of Cornwall, as landlord, and by the University College as lessee, restoration works have received grant aid from Task Force Trees, a Countryside Stewardship agreement, and latterly, from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Significant improvements to the historic landscape, the College setting, and public access have been made, including lake restoration works, avenue replanting, recreation of a demolished focal point Orangery, and hard and soft landscape integration of new University College buildings.
