Client: Bath Spa University
Location: Newton Park, Newton St. Loe, Bath
The grade II* registered historic landscape of Newton Park, to the west of Bath, provides a stunning setting for Bath Spa University’s main campus, with facilities for around 4,200 students. The campus is highly sensitive, as it includes listed buildings and a scheduled monument, and is also important for biodiversity, being home to Otters, Great Crested Newts and eight species of bat.
Nicholas Pearson Associates has acted as consultants at Newton Park since 1992, preparing the original Landscape Conservation Management Plan to guide historic landscape restoration and management, as well as working on a number of campus developments.
Work has recently focused on a Campus Masterplan to set out the University’s intentions over the next 20 years to provide new academic facilities, student residences and other facilities. This will also enable the ‘undevelopment’ of parts of the campus and restoration of the historic landscape through demolition of postwar buildings. We have been a key member of the development and planning team, advising on masterplanning and design, landscape, ecology and environmental impact assessment (EIA). Our main aim has been to integrate new development into the surrounding parkland and for the development to have positive effects on both the landscape and biodiversity at Newton Park.
The Phase 1 Academic development, which will deliver a state of the art dedicated studio facility for digital media technology, was given planning permission in 2011 and is now being implemented.
Bath and North East Somerset Council granted planning permission for the Phase 2 Student Residential development proposals at the end of September 2012.
