Anaerobic Digestion Facility Developments

The development of anaerobic digestion (AD) technology has made waste to energy facilities more commercially viable, and AD facilities are expanding rapidly across the UK.

AD involves the breakdown of biodegradable material by micro organisms to create heat and gas, the latter which can then be used to create electricity, and valuable fertiliser. It is widely used to treat wastewater in the UK and is now being used to treat other organic wastes.

These projects are part of the solution to increase recycling and reduce food waste material being sent to landfill, and are making an increasing contribution to the UK’s energy needs. AD also reduces greenhouse gas emissions arising from sending food waste to landfill.

As with similar energy infrastructure developments, environmental considerations play an important part in achieving a successful development. Initial feasibility studies can identify key constraints which may influence site layout and inform early consultations with statutory consultees. This is an important aspect of understanding and scoping more detailed assessments which might be needed for a planning application.

Another aspect is ensuring all consultees understand what such developments comprise in terms of built form and infrastructure, so that consultation and engagement is positive and misconceptions avoided.
