We were commissioned by Dyson Ltd to assist with the rapid expansion of its existing research and development facility at Malmesbury, Wiltshire. The new centre was designed by Wilkinson Eyre architects. Landscape design solutions responded to the aesthetics of the building, its main approaches and immediate surrounds, and integrated the ecological value of the site. Boundary planting treatments responded to the historic importance of Malmesbury and assisted with the visual screening of the site.
A range of native tree and shrub species was chosen to complement areas of existing woodland bordering the site whilst ornamental varieties were selected for the building frontages and main car parking areas. A formal planting arrangement which included a diverse range of Hebes, ornamental grasses, bamboos and sedges was selected for the central courtyard between buildings which responded to the variations in the building’s form.
Site supervision of the construction project included mitigation works and creative ecological design solutions involving wetland creation, the construction of newt hibernacular and an artificial badger sett, the establishment of a wildflower grassland using turves translocated from other areas of the site and a range of plantings designed to link areas of habitat. We supervised a 5 year management plan, designed to maximise the site's aesthetic character and ecological value.
