Client: Denbighshire County Council
Awards: National BALI Award Winner 2005
Location: Plas Newydd, Denbighshire, Wales
Plas Newydd is unique as a minature romantic landscape and ferme ornee of the 1780s, reflecting the personalities who brought it to prominence in the society of that period, the Ladies of Llangollen. Such was their fame that Plas Newydd became an essential place to visit on the Picturesque Tour. Today it remains popular with both local residents and tourists.
Nicholas Pearson Associates prepared a Historic Landscape Restoration plan, based on comprehensive archival study, field evaluation and research. The report supported a full and successful application to the Heritage Lottery Fund, and resulted in an award of £600,000. Having also secured a range of other partnership funding from the National Assembly Arts Lottery, we have implemented works including river restoration, repair and recreation of rustic shelters, stabilisation of the Weavers Mill, woodland thinning, recreation of the Ladies' flower garden, creation of an accessible stable courtyard to the new tea-room, and conversion of the potting shed to Y Caban, an arts workshop and exhibition room.
