Bath Spa Hotel is an award winning, 5 star hotel situated within the Bath World Heritage site, also lying within the Conservation Area. The buildings comprise a range of styles and ages set within an attractive, mature parkland landscape.
As part of a major hotel refurbishment and expansion, a complex series of development projects were undertaken including construction of a new spa facility, refurbished dining facilities and the creation of new luxury suites in previous staff accommodation. These developments required the design and implementation of new gardens and courtyards to provide a high quality landscape setting for the new facilities as well as accommodating necessary access and circulation.
We prepared initial condition plans for the scheme to identify constraints and opportunities, followed by sketch and detailed proposals for the hard and soft landscape. We were closely involved in the implementation of the external works contract undertaken and completed by ISS Waterers.
Key design issues related to mature tree retention and protection, significant level changes and the complexity of the site's layout. The gardens incorporate a series of spaces, focusing on a new large stone paved terrace. The soft landscape comprises of contrasting textures, colours and shapes, set within a sweeping, organic design that successfully linked the varied architectural forms.
