Swanage Sea Front Image

In order to meet standards required by the Urban Waste Water Treatment and Bathing Water Directives, a £28m new membrane treatment works was proposed. The Swanage Waste Water Treatment Works is located in an important and prominent position on the seafront within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A sensitive environmental design solution for the brownfield site has been implemented that has limited the impact of large scale development whilst providing a positive addition to the existing townscape and harbour.

The solution involved setting the works into the hillside and designing a 'green roof' system that, as well as blending into the surrounding landscape, incorporates chalk grassland plant species. Opportunities for improved public access have been realised with the creation of an open space linking with the adjacent downland, and a new seafront promenade with beach access.
